As the Director of Alumni Relations at an east coast engineering institution, I agree with much you have said. Over and over, I hear that it was the ability to analyze and sequentially solve a problem that made the difference in the alumnus's career. Those who have moved into fields other than engineering are the most passionate about the head start they got on others in this area. Frequently, they comment that they are looked to for their skills at figuring out which part of the problem needs to be solved first.
